left and right are not actually much better, but think of it like this:
If you are economically liberal, with regards to few restrictions on financial transactions and employment, you are generally considered right wing.
Socially liberal, which I assume has something to do with freedom from your social history, is more of a leftist thing...
Conservatives are generally regarded as a right wing thing, typically because it focuses more on old _values_ - but the word in itself indicates that in for example sweden, every conservative would be a social democrat since they have ruled the country for a 100 years... (the term is actually not used about local politics here, I assume since it would cause some confusion)
But trying to force things into a simple one dimensional scale is probably ridiculous, these days. I assume it would be better the more dimensions you add to a comparison of political interests; but to compare every single little issue in an ideology would make a mess to visualize properly, so I'd suggest sticking with at most 5 important areas, you decide which ones.

Yeah. In the US, what jh refers to as "economically liberal" is called "classically liberal."
