Also the specs say 24 kg empty and make me wonder how much that central column 'lung' weighs, and the price seems parallel to a tumbling composter, which I would still assume composted faster. My dilemma is always leaves though, even a normal old black plastic bin handles my food and garden waste sufficiently.

a tumbler just gives you a means of turning over the compost without having to get out shovels and rakes and implements of destruction. it's a lot like taking cold remedies. if you don't take them, your cold goes away in about a week. if you do, it lasts about 7 days...

A tumbler replicates the process you could do by hand, sure, none of us do of course, so I wouldn't think your six of one half dozen of another analogy is really apt, since for all practical purposes it really speeds things up when a couple quick turns aerates and mixes parallel to ten or so minutes dragging out tools and getting dirty. My dilemma is I have woods on three sides and neither this one or a tumbler really seems to offer me a viable solution superior to 'the heap' because even a traditional composter handles my regular food/garden waste easily but even my two big 4x4x4 cubes can't hold an entire autumn, which is why I was curious about these lungs, since it seems the concept could be adapted to bigger size and if they complete a cycle in under a month I would probably be able to get all the autumn 'leaf harvest' into my containers since I'd be able to do an early and late batch.

ok, i guess i misunderstood your original post then. what i meant by shortcut is that everything i've read on the subject says compost doesn't happen any faster than 2-3 weeks at best, no matter what method you're using. but if you've got 1+acres of lawn & leaf i can see where you would want a different method that requires less effort on your part.
