Can you tell me who this person is/was with out first Wikiing?

(did I just make up a new verb?)

I have never heard of this person until the other day when I was looking at a Children's Atlas.


He is a scientist who lost his nose and had some sort of metal one. I can't recall if he cut it off like Van Gogh did his ear, or if he lost it in a freak science accident. He might have been crazy too if I remember correctly. He was studied physics or astronomy or electricity or something, not a chemist or biologist. But I don't know if I'm right about that.


He was a astronomer, and his nose was cut off in a duel.
