Can you tell me who this person is/was with out first Wikiing?

(did I just make up a new verb?)

I have never heard of this person until the other day when I was looking at a Children's Atlas.

He's an interesting historical figure, as Camilla noted. He also lends his name to the part of the Moon arguably most visible from Earth.
