As per your uncomfort...examine that. Do you see a Down's baby (or grown individual) as something to be ashamed of? Or embarassed? I don't. Sure, there is such a thing as being sensitive to an individual (or family's) situation, but there is also such a thing as giving pity where it is not warrented. I've known many individuals and their families who had Down's Syndrome, and pity (in whatever form, whether special consideration or undue sensitivity) was not something that they wanted or were comfortable receiving.

It has nothing to do with shame; it's just unpleasant to be discounted as a population, no matter who you are. I grew up next to a family with a DS child my own age. I never pitied him or his family, but I did acknowledge their challenges.
