I'm not particularly good at thinking up all the ways to abuse private information Helene Send a noteboard - 29/04/2011 02:56:03 PM
I have to say that this does not particularly concern me.

Why not? What if people want to break in to your house and use your data to get to know your routine? Of course, you are not the specific target. But it should not be too hard to set up a criminal organization around information left online about people's whereabouts.

My general rule is nothing I'd be uncomfortable with my employer seeing.

What about people who intend malice? Sure, not embarrassing yourself is one thing. But there are things like identity theft.

It tends to send me into a frothing rage.

What is your argument against it.

I plan to be a lawyer and possibly a judge. I can't allow personal information to interfere with that.

Clear.

I'm a super creep online; I will gleefully stalk a person to ferret out info about them.

An internet detective?

There'd probably be a lot of lawsuits.

Of course, it was just an example. But it's basically intended as a way to show that while current owners of a vast wealth of information may be benign, future owners may very well not be.
I'm always reminded of the Jews that were registered with a synagogue before the outbreak of WWII.

I'm actually okay with this, given the absolute inaccessibility of said data by anyone without a subpoena.

Do you know how much it costs to retain that much data? Do you know who will pay for that?

I imagine those regimes are rather more concerned with the political capabilities of the Internet than the ability it grants people to babble about their latest genital piercing.

I doubt that it's the babbling that they'll be interested in. But e.g. the Stasi killed people for making bad political jokes. They shot them in the neck.
