My stained glass teacher told me that if your lead has aged (oxidized) then you need flux more than if it's new. I'm guessing you're either using lead you've had around for a while, or the store sold you some lead they've had around for a while. You could probably polish it and not need the flux. I'm not familiar with using candle wax/tallow.
Thank you for the compliment - I need to get back into working with stained glass, it's been a while. Just so much to do, though.
Yeah it has been sitting around for a while so that doesn't help. I tried scrubbing it a bit but only had silly kitchen cleaner pad things - I'm sure my mum uses a bit of wire wool. It's been a while since I've done much too and things are coming back slowly!
It is pretty time consuming. I've stacked up a load of wedding/birthday/Christmas presents that I've been meaning to get around to for ages so figured it's about time...and that I should do it while I still have time while I'm looking for a job. I also got a glass grinder for my birthday which makes things SO much easier - for a while I was just using a metal file thing that was surprisingly effective but very slow going, and difficult to use on curves. Not a great photo but here are a couple of bits I've made recently-ish
