I'd avoid Cornwall and Devon - they're likely to be too full of people on holiday to get around.

Bath, Oxford and Cambridge are very pretty. The Lake District and Peak District are both very attractive regions and good for going on walks or seeing nice towns like Buxton.... but that might all be a bit boring for a ten year old?
