I'll be sure to let my mother know she could have opted out as a Texas state employee. I'm sure she'll be as surprised by that as she is that her "overly generous tax payer pension" (the one she passed over private sector jobs making thrice the salary to get, the one the Lege keeps cutting and/or raising the qualifications for in every session) is superior to Social Security.
