But why did Jesus need to be baptised? Presumably he was already circumcised, what with being Jewish and all.

Symbols are important. It was to show that God was with him, the Spirit in him, and that he was prepared to submit himself to the new Covenant. I think. I am no theologian, but that's how I understand it.

At some point when we are in Edinburgh again, you should invite your preacher (I cannot remember what you call them, only that it is not priest or curate) so that Tor and I can ask him about all the tricky stuff. Tor keeps asking me this sort of stuff, and I more often than not have no idea.

Heh. Or I could loan you my Systematic Theology?

You could. That would be interesting.

Do you want a theological answer or a historical one? - 10/06/2011 03:16:44 PM 728 Views

Psh.You can dress it up with spiritualism and semantics, but the concept boils down to "magic water" - 11/06/2011 03:56:03 AM 550 Views

your problem is you're trying to apply objective logic to religion - 11/06/2011 04:13:01 PM 940 Views
I'm not, exactly. Religion has internal logic. For example, certain things are "unclean" - 11/06/2011 04:40:33 PM 576 Views
Beliefs about holy water are internally logical. - 11/06/2011 07:36:08 PM 625 Views
