The definition/purpose of baptism varies widely depending on denomination. That's one of the problems with treating Christianity as a monolithic religion.
In our church, baptism is a sign and a seal of God's covenant promise to save His people. It doesn't confer salvation in any form, nor does it make a person a Christian.
so it takes the place of circumcision?
Despite the fact Paul explicitly stated as a doctrinal principle (i.e. in his capacity as an Apostle and Church leader baptized with the Holy Spirit, not just idle rambling on the efficacy of wine for indigestion or the importance of a lady Sunday bonnet) that circumcision is not incumbent for Gentile Christians (and said he wished those who said otherwise would go all the way and castrate themselves.
