But the idea of a laser on my eyes scares me more than that hypothetical scenario, I think.

I have a friend who had laser surgery a few years ago. She said it wasn't the lasers that scared her, it was the needle that they had to stick in her eye first. Watching it approach slowly would be more than a little unnerving.

but I had laser surgery and there was no needle involved in mine.

A non-needle option would be preferable. Was there any cutting involved?

Yes there was. They numbed my eyes with drops and then used a machine to cut a flap in the outer layer (retina?) of my eye. It didn't hurt, but there was a feeling of a lot of pressure on my eye.

Cornea. Retina is the pigment layer on the inside that has all the rods and cones (which detect light).
