And perhaps the biggest reason vengeance oriented "justice" and the death penalty in particular have little appeal to me. As with many of my views on social policy I'm disappointed that it's so often dismissed as bleeding heart weakness. The sad and simple truth is that however much my heart does or doesn't public policy is driven by englightened self interest rather than morality. I try not to overanalyze that though because I don't like what it says about humanity.
