Sounds like exactly what you are looking for. Friendly, smart, and lap sized. They have hair instead of fur. That means they don't shed. At all.

However, the family picked the dog. Having a dog was not my choice. I hate having to be somewhere at a certain time to take care of a creature. Just one more annoyance that I'd rather not deal with.
