My Indian food experiences are limited to restaurants around New York and Bangkok.
Dunno what the disparity is between those and Indian-food-in-India.
Oddly enough, I've found a lot of good Thai places in the US. They're very, very often run by Thai immigrants. I think it's because up until the last few years, Thai food wasn't particularly mainstream, and thus the only people opening Thai restaurants were actual Thais.
Good way to tell it's authentic- look for pictures of the King. The absence of pictures isn't damning, but the presence shows the restaurant is either owned by Thais, or people who have done their homework.

I amuse myself.

Yeah, I only tend to call a non-vegetarian dish with sauce/gracy a curry. *NM*

I'll be honest, whatever is labeled as "curry" if I go to an Indian or Thai restaurant
