Can't go wrong with fuzzy math; look at all it's done for us!

Of course, all of the "balancing" such an amendment would require would have to be done without tax increases, which is a mathematical impossibility. But who needs math? Not the Republicans!
By declaring we'd spend the trillion dollar Clinton surplus on tax breaks and the other half on a trillion dollars of corporate welfare we ended the longest period of economic growth in our history and plunged our country into the worst recession since 1929. Best of all, the same people demanding we cut the deficit at any cost now just months ago demanded with equal force that we keep those ten year old tax cuts (so, y'know, not deficit reduction at ANY cost; be reasonable.
) Right in the middle of their brawl with President Barack Obama over extending the debt ceiling and hacking trillions from projected deficits, GOP leaders are forcing House and Senate debates next week over similar amendments requiring the budget to be balanced, starting no sooner than five years from now....
"It certainly will show who's really serious about trying to get spending under control and who isn't," said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, a leading sponsor of the Senate amendment, which is backed by all 47 Republican senators.

The Senator has a gift for irony.
We cut spending AND raise taxes or we're just posturing while Rome burns; I don't see what's so difficult to grasp about that. The public gets it, and is set to hand GOP Congressmen their heads over it next year; Democrats might even miraculously retain a Senate majority despite the fact a lot more Dems are up for re-election. Still won't matter unless Obama begins to show some leadership and Republicans are sufficiently chastened by the public reversing the gains it gave the Tea Party to actually work with him on sensible policy.
