Entitlements are part of the problem, but far from the whole of it. Joel Send a noteboard - 02/08/2011 08:31:23 PM
I share the sentiment that children shouldn't be made to hold up signs like that. However, how much are you going to tax people? Our entitlement programs are structured such that they rob from the future (children) to pay for the past (old people) at a rate of $4 spent per senior to $1 per child. Look at the $500,000 spent in two days to try to save the life of a 95-year-old woman (this was cited in a news article I read but I cannot find the link right now - I will find it, though) and you'll see how we can save money quite quickly - cap spending per year on people above 90, have a higher cap on people above 80, and those who were going to die anyway will do so without lots of expensive and unnecessary procedures. And before you say, "oh, but you wouldn't want this if it were your parent or grandparent," I can tell you that we took my 93-year-old grandmother off her blood pressure medication because she had Alzheimer's and had just been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and some jackass wanted to operate. She died peacefully in her sleep a few weeks later. Quality of life is very important, and the vast majority of the exorbitant costs of our entitlement programs occur in the last year of a senior's life. Cutting back on the "try to save them at all costs" (literally) mentality would probably radically reduce the cost of Medicare and Medicaid.

I share much of that sentiment, but good luck trying to sell it; the last guy who tried watched his approval rating drop 20 points as a result, so before you trot it out you better put a muzzle on the former governor of Alaska (not that that's a bad idea on principle). That ain't what's bankrupting Medicare though; its costs are only growing about a third as fast as private medical insurance.

It ain't what's driving our debt either, at least, not by itself. Yes, we need entitlement cuts, but we also need tax hikes, and people who think we can just slash all the stuff they don't need (or think they don't) and leave their personal pet issues alone are the reason we're in this mess. For thirty years we've watched the debt sore and done nothing except borrow more money (much of it from the Social Security trust fun that's so finanicially unfeasible that it had money to spare throughout those decades). All because every attempt to eliminate deficits was caught between the Scylla of seniors who reject entitlement and the wealthy who reject tax hikes. Well, guess what, it's a national problem, and the nation will have to bear the burden of solving it, together. If you think socialism and want to opt out go buy yourself an island somewhere you can; if you can't do that, consider the possibility you've miscalculated where your interests (and your familys) lie. The notion that we need only take care of large businesses and they'll take care of everyone else was always laughable, and died with American unions anyway.
