Well, my account was supposed to have been shut off in May, so I'm not really sure exactly how any FNAL email is getting to me. Anyway, it's only the cms_uaf_users list, which isn't high volume.
Well, my FNAL email automatically reroutes everything to my uni email, so...maybe it sorted of automatically transferred to whatever email your FNAL account was going to? Yeah...I have no idea where I was going with that.
Cool. I love learning about theory, but have never had the patience to do actual research in it.
See, I have way more patience for the theory than I do for dealing with experimental stuff. My work this summer that was experimental involved completely rewriting portions of the Minerva Monte Carlo cos it was so useless. I really enjoyed that, but I think I'd've been really bored if I was doing data analysis for 10 weeks.

And yeah, it kinda does, but the PGRE is only offered in one places in the UK. So, I either need to take 3 trains and travel 8 hours to one of the parts of the UK that is furthest from me, or I can just fly to Norway. I haven't yet decided which I'll do, cos both involve missing a day of uni and stuff.I actually made an Access database to help narrow mine down from ~40 to a more manageable 7. Talk to your professors for advice, but don't feel too obliged to listen to them if they say some criterion doesn't matter, since usually what that means is just that it doesn't matter to them.
Yeah. I plan on asking my professors to help me pick out schools in the UK, but most of them don't know a ton about the US so I'm on my own for that, really. I think I'm going to try to keep it to about 8 applications, because otherwise I'll go insane.
Example: I heard again and again that the location of the school shouldn't really matter, because I'd just be spending all my time at CERN anyway. However, it turns out that the UMD CMS group is much more flexible than the usual "ship off all the grad students for 1-3 years after quals" model. Now, I'll get to spend a lot of time in a fun area and go to CERN when it's convenient and makes sense. (I love CERN itself, but Geneva... not so much. It's a very expensive city.)
That's a really good deal.
You're going to get really bored of airplanes if you're flying back and forth a lot, though. 
I don't know much about UMD CP; is it near Baltimore?
They must, since the professors in the group weren't around during UMD's open house. They're pretty much going on my resume plus a few phone calls and emails.
Yeah, I know what you mean. That's rather what happened to me with Northwestern; they ended up pulling out all the stops for my visit,, and they'd really only spoken to my be email and seen my CV. Guess we're pretty cool.
A perk of the RA/TA time split (beyond the main fun part of actually getting to do research) is that I can slack off on the research during exam periods, and then I'll only have half the teaching workload. (That is how the professor actually described it to me.)
I love it when professors explicitly give you permission to do things like that. Such good times. When do you take quals?I worked on a project for ATLAS last semester, through University of Albany. I was working on some software to do fast estimations of trigger rates, which was an interesting intersection between physics and computing.
That sounds interesting. I've really enjoyed my software project. Teaching myself C++ was definitely a useful thing.
Some people diss the big collaborations (I'm sure you heard some of that going on between the different groups at Fermi), but one thing I like about them is that there are so many different areas to maintain and improve, but they all come together at the end. And then you get to make cool-looking plots. 
The biggest thing that would get me about the huge collaborations is the massive amounts of meetings! Minerva has like, 60-70 collaborators, but they're are like, two or 3 meetings everyday about different things. It's mind-boggling.
