Playing a trick like that ought to make a conviction very hard, or at least give grounds for a long line of appeals. I don't understand why they didn't just go round to their houses and arrest them there. They obviously knew where they lived or they couldn't have sent letters.
Where in an interrogation the cop would say that the criminal's buddy in the interrogation room next door just put all the blame on him? Thus, causing the criminal to admit to the crime and place the blame on his buddy, who was faithfully keeping his mouth shut. It's a valid police technique.
