despite that though, I easily can imagine various rightwing nutjobs like Beck supporting a Pinochet type figure if they felt the alternative was a freely elected Chavez type figure.

Your point about the Middle East is a good one - Saudi Arabia, despite being a pretty horrible place to be born for the average person, seems to do pretty well for supporters, as do other gulf states.
