No biggy. Joel Send a noteboard - 13/09/2011 03:54:18 PM
Guess that's what I get for firing off a quick reply while busy.

And from for that matter. UPS and FEdEx both do Dry Ice shipments, and Drice Ice Directory which keeps track of all the places that sell small amounts of dry ice direct to the public, you just type in your area code and it gives the applicable. It also has detailed directions on what to do, how to package things, and so on. Hope that helps.

I haven't seen them yet (they're somewhat uncommon, I'm told) but understand frozen burritos are 2 for 40 or 50 kroner here. That's before about 17% sales tax. The Norwegian kroner is currently trading at about 5.5 to the dollar. In other words, a frozen burrito is about $5. I could get them in ten packs for less than that at our local grocery store back home.

Sounds like Germany... you may find Doner Kepabs in the region, if so they - while totally unlike a burrito in most respects - tend to fill the hole that a total absence of Mexican food leaves. I was rather partial to the damn things and so were pretty much all the Texans in my unit.

I doubt that you'd save money though in shipping burritos from home via dry ice, you have to factor in not only the original shipping cost but also the cost of the dry ice and the shipping cost of the dry ice as part of the package. I'd guess... guess... that your break even point would probably be around 20+ pounds of burritos in a shipment. Using dry ice for food shipments to individuals is really more of a luxury or special occasion thing, the niche market is shipping steaks or pre-done meals classy meals, though Ben & Jerry's has done it with some of their more exotic ice creams for some time. You'd probably be better off making your own and storing them.

The biggest variable, at least from my perspective, is the cost of the dry ice, 'cos I have no idea what the rate would be, but the cost of 20 pounds of burritos plus shipping should be a little over $150. These are the ones I have in mind (apparently they've gone to 2 lb. 8 packs, though how much that is with ice attached I'm not sure) and that would be about 80 burritos that would be around $400 here.

Like I told Aemon, I'll do a lot of homework before I commit to spending any money (and will check out the Doner Kepabs; thanks for the tip) but it sounds like it's worth looking into even if I never do more than that.
