It makes a world of difference whether people are cooperative and whether cops give reasonable orders. I have the utmost sympathy for their routine entry into dangerously unknown situations, but a lot of cops also let authority go to their heads. I expect them to make people regret looking for trouble, but also not look for it themselves. Veteran city cops are pretty good about that, because trouble finds them often enough they need not seek it. However, my experience has been that is frequently not the case where young guys have something to prove and/or places a stolen car is the crime of the century. Unfortunately, many small towns will take cops whose records got them bounced out of other places.

I am generally inclined to give cops the benefit of a doubt, but only marginally. They are human beings like everyone else, except that carrying a badge and gun requires they receive a little more oversight.
