It doesn't sound like that's how it's being used...

but I cannot adequately express how much I haaaaaaate the following phrases: "hotting up" and "I was stood/sat."
I saw "hotting up" in The Economist. It makes me want to punch someone in the neck. And you were definitely not "stood" anywhere, unless someone put you there. Bleck.
In the case of hotting up it could be used in reference to sports: "As the league reached it's later stages, competition was really hotting up for a place in the playoffs."
And for "I was stood/sat": "Due to my black eye, I was stood in the back of the class photograph in the hope I wouldn't be seen."
...that is a legitimate(ish) use of the word that nossy would find acceptable based on her initial qualification.
If you are from Betelgeuse, please have one of your Earth friends read what I've written before you respond. Or try concentrating harder.
"The trophy problem has become extreme."
"The trophy problem has become extreme."
I suppose they might be completely acceptable,

That's possibly the best perfume ad I've seen lately (and no, not because of Scarlett).

That is a phenomenally poorly written commercial. And they make Scar Jo look less pretty. *NM*
