We do, but it's puzzling to me why this one is so common. Tim Send a noteboard - 18/12/2011 02:08:43 PM
I'm sure there's a PhD in it somewhere.

"Grr, that person from a different part of the world doesn't speak in exactly the same way as me! It makes me so angry!"

The oddest thing is that it's the only form of rage I can think of that affects educated people more than the uneducated.

It affects me as much as anybody else, I hasten to add, but I think at least I've managed to contain it mostly to written mistakes (spelling, punctuation etc.)

It isn't truly a big deal, but it is jarring to me. And I like to complain. It's fun to have something else to grouch over. I can't stick to grammar and all that jazz, because I am not always sure I'm correct. I have to look up hyphenation rules almost every time I write something. :P

Oh, those are easy. If you're using a phrase of more than one word as though it were a single adjective, hyphenate. Unless you're talking about compound nouns, in which case there isn't really a rule: it's just a question of how common the compound is, which will vary from one country to another.
Vigilantibus non dormientibus jura subveniunt.

—Nous disons en allemand : le guerre, le mort, le lune, alors que 'soleil' et 'amour' sont du sexe féminin : la soleil, la amour. La vie est neutre.

—La vie ? Neutre ? C'est très joli, et surtout très logique.
