I think we sometimes put too much emphasis on higher education. There are many, many jobs that don't require it, but are equally important to a highly functioning society. We all know that not everyone can be a highly educated doctor, lawyer, etc. Imo, it's not wrong of those who can't to be proud of what they have decided to do for a career (as long as it actually is a career - I'm not talking about people who bounce from one thing to another).

I do agree that teenagers at McDonald's aren't professionals, but then again, I can't recall ever hearing the term being used that way. In fact, I've never even come across someone calling him/herself a professional restaurant manager, though I know several people who will do that until they retire.

I think I only agree with you on one aspect - if someone isn't in a highly professionalized career, I would object to them saying "I am a Professional." I'm sure it's nitpicky , but I don't mind the same person saying "I am a professional maid."
