Picking a VP isn't really about picking the guy who gives you the best chance to beat the other guy. I do see a group of voters whose support for Romney will would change by picking Christie. He he probably couldn't even put his home state in play.
Someone like Bob McDonnell wouldn't be a bad choice either. Virginia is now a swing state and he is conservative enough to please most conservatives and there really is nothing about him that would scare off the disillusioned Obama moderates Romney brings.
Take Christie out of Jersey and he really isn't conservative anymore. He has publicly defended his states strict gun laws, he blocked fracking in his state and said he supports a path to citizenship for illegals. None of those get the republican base excited at least not in a positive way.
You always need your base. You need the independent and moderate vote to win the election but you need the base t show up to man phones and pass out fliers.
