the rope nets not so much, but the rhinos aren't usually LOOKING to hurt people. and the big sticks making noise tells them "hey don't go this way". It's not going to stop them from being aggressive, but it will redirect a rhino that just wants to go away from humans.
That being said, I do prefer to deal with rhinos from the back of a bakkie.
