I think it's reasonable to let people off if they've already made travel arrangements that serving could interfere with. I'm glad you didn't have to miss your cruise!

Anyway, we're getting a little off topic here. I don't pretend to know how to fix the system (although I have a few ideas) and that's not originally the point I was trying to argue. I just didn't think that Narg should get angry at people who try to get out of jury duty.
