We don't celebrate communist holidays in the US (e.g., May Day).

It's not just communist countries that celebrate International Women's Day, though it's true it's only in Russia and the neighbouring countries that just about everybody seems to get two and a half days off for it...


Women's Day is an official UN initiative since 1977, and the irony is that a decade before it became a communist holiday (an early step of the revolution in fact), it was first an initiative of socialist American women....

But the "communist holiday" makes such a good excuse for the more retrograde forces in the US not to adopt this "holiday" (which isn't one in most countries, just a day devoted to women and women rights). Mind you, it's probably better that way, they'd find a way to turn this into a purely commercial holiday like every other.
