Brainstorming sessions can turn negative and have for me in the past, usually because of a bad brainstorm leader. To me, ideally a brainstorm session has an appointed leader, which counters negative thoughts immediately and steers the conversation back to positive thinking. The leader doesn't have to be part of the brainstorming team, and personally I prefer it if (s)he is not participating actively.
