There has never been anything even remotely liberal or "understanding" about his views concerning Catholicism and any other sects. His view is really nothing less than the view China has of Taiwan, the Protestants are rebellious provinces that need to be brought back to the motherland. Hope you like my analogy.

The Protestants still care, but compared to the split between them and Rome and the Orthodox and Rome, the Protestant spit is just in its infancy. Heck, by the time the Schism actually happened Rome and Constantinople had already been about five or six hundred years in the making. The Orthodox simply don't care what Benedict or any Pope has to say.
