It was bigger and much brighter than usual. I wish I had been able to view it on the horizon, I heard that was where it looked much bigger.

As Isaac alluded to (and you may already know,) that is kind of an optical illusion owing to perspective: The moon LOOKS bigger on the horizon because surrounded by other objects we can see are MUCH closer. It is actually closest (and thus visually largest) when directly overhead, but looks smaller because there is nothing nearby to provide scale. Anyway, given how long you lived right next door to Keck, I have no sympathy for you.
