All the reasons have been stated already- space, time unaccompanied, renting, flatmates, yadda yadda.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to get some sort of pet. A lot of lizards and snakes take up a comparatively small area and are less hands on.
Also, maybe there would be the possibility of volunteering at an animal shelter at weekends or in the evenings. That way you could be around animals and could find out if you are really suited to care for an animal. After all there are some people who, regardless of the resources at hand and the will to do it, are truly unable to properly care for a pet. Volunteering would give you experience around animals without having to truly 100% have to commit to the entirety of their care.
