Even if we confirmed tomorrow morning that there were indeed aliens in that star system, it's unlikely that my life would change at all. No matter what we find, we can't get there, or even send a message, within five or six of my lifetimes. To those of us living today, humanity's most momentous discovery of all time would be little more than water-cooler chat.

I know it doesn't make a lot of sense, but sometimes I think NASA's budget should be entirely redirected into physics research, with the goal of developing FTL travel. Finding stuff is cool and all, but at the same time it doesn't do much good while we remain stuck in our solar system.
