No kidding; I want my expletive fusion reactor al-expletive-ready. Joel Send a noteboard - 09/07/2012 07:19:14 AM
I know it doesn't make a lot of sense, but sometimes I think NASA's budget should be entirely redirected into physics research, with the goal of developing FTL travel. Finding stuff is cool and all, but at the same time it doesn't do much good while we remain stuck in our solar system.

Oh, if we had any theories for doing FTL we'd dump money in it like crazy, gov't and private sector, we don't, and to be honest while I'd never say 'impossible' I really don't expect that to ever change. Right now I'd settle very happily for a functioning fusion reactor, that's the one that really opens windows up.

Ya'll have been telling us it is "just around the corner" since before I was born, but the practicality that has made it impossible that entire time is now making it an increasingly urgent need. Glancing around the net the last couple days I noticed both tidal and wave energy are beginning to make promising progress, but is hard to deny the appeal of tremendous amounts of energy with no byproduct except the most inert atom in the universe.

That thermodynamics is a bear; when you think about it, virtually every conflict since the second species' birth can be attributed to the Second Law. If cows did not need energy grass would sleep a lot better at night (so to speak.)

I am a little confused why we would seek stars emitting tons of IR as evidence of Dyson Spheres. - 09/07/2012 05:29:56 AM 467 Views
