Now Merkel may be able to pass through some things such like tax relief, a simplification of the tax code and a possible extension of the time that nuclear power plants can continue to operate.

Go FDP!
All the polls and surveys indicate that Merkel is popular with the left as well as the right, and may have gained votes for her party from people whose ideas are much more SPD or Grüne. Of course the FDP did make some serious gains, but still I think it'd be a mistake to interpret these results as a mandate to implement the FDP's full agenda. The FDP have already announced they'll drive a hard bargain, but I think it'll be bargaining alright, taking into account that the FDP is less than half the size of the Union, rather than Merkel fully embracing their policies. The policies will certainly shift to the right, but the majority in the Bundestag is limited enough that they don't have the political capital to pass all of the FDP's unpopular ideas.

Merkel is further to the left than most if not all Democrats in government here in the US.
