I post this not because Morrello's politics are surprising - anyone with a clue knows what RATM stands for - but because it's just a blistering attack of the sort that many musicians do against politicians who use their songs and ignore the context.
You're right that it is an attack. And that's all it is. So what should I conclude as the base reason for you posting this? As another example that most muscians are not good political thinkers and should stick to writing about partying and relationships? That the left in general has no solid arguments so it attacks instead?
Also you suggest Ryan uses RATM's songs. But nowhere in the text does Morello says that Ryan does. Maybe Ryan does--I don't know, but it's not in this text.
Paul Ryan's love of Rage Against the Machine is amusing, because he is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades. Charles Manson loved the Beatles but didn't understand them. Governor Chris Christie loves Bruce Springsteen but doesn't understand him. And Paul Ryan is clueless about his favorite band, Rage Against the Machine.
And this first paragraph is priceless. Morello essentially compares Manson to Christie. If he really thinks those two are alike, then I can safely dismiss anything Morello has to say. Secondly, it is likely that Manson didn't understand the Beatles. Manson's own words prove that. I find it highly unlikely that Christie doesn't understand Springsteen, however. With such (purposely?) muddled thinking why should anyone care what Morello or RATM has to say?

It's been a poor past year for musicians commenting on political/social matters, hasn't it?

Yeah, but they're probably getting asked about it because of the election

So I assume RATM is giving away all their money to avoid being the super rich they hate so much? *NM*

Ryan comments on Morrello's music, Morrello comments on Ryan's politics. Seems fair.
