Yeah, but they're probably getting asked about it because of the election

While I'll admit part of me found the rhetoric to be amusing, another part thought he could have been civil or let it drop, since Ryan hasn't said anything other than RATM were one of his favorite bands when he was younger. But something must be in the water; Dave Mustaine (whose late 80s/early 90s Megadeth albums I enjoyed) made even sillier comments and Hank Jr. certainly got in trouble last year for his outspokenness. It seems the "silly season" has infected a few singers all along the political spectrum.
I'll give them one slight edge, unlike a writer who is generally considered a thinker, musicians and actors even more aren't respected for their brains and no one really gives two flying shits in the halls of power what they say, so they never get chastised over it, and they are notoriously out of control. I don't like them encouraging their fans to be reckless idiots but frankly it doesn't take much encouragement for your average teenager anyway. I'm more irritated at media outlets for even mentioning it, they need to get their shit together and start absorbing that there's news, there's 'interest' which is thinner but sells copy and can be excused, and then there's 'not news'. This isn't news, this is like 'well duh' or a cheap and meaningless jab at Ryan to which he can't possibly reply with out looking stupid or petty, and the media shouldn't give forums for that. At least if, say, Obama/Romney/etc had said "I really love X, and I really think their message is deep' there might be legitimate room for someone to say "You know, the artist's message is mostly about Arson and shooting crack, could you clarify what aspect of the message you found deep sir?" and we could all laugh, or at least we should all laugh. We shouldn't give a damn if some rocker or starlet or writer has views that would flip the most gerrymandered district to the other side if they ran for office. But its hard to ignore them when they're given attention.
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.

It's been a poor past year for musicians commenting on political/social matters, hasn't it?

So I assume RATM is giving away all their money to avoid being the super rich they hate so much? *NM*

Ryan comments on Morrello's music, Morrello comments on Ryan's politics. Seems fair.
