The US government should not apologize for private movies. I don't care if they show Mohammed screwing goats, his underage wives and then drinking the blood of newborns while talking to Satan. The acts of private citizens (or non-citizens on US soil) are not the responsibility of the US government if they are not planning a crime, and exercising free speech is obviously not a crime, no matter how distasteful some may find it.
The timing of these supposedly spontaneous protests was almost certainly not a coincidence, and any apology, particularly one on 9/11 made in response to radical attacks on our embassies and consulates, is repulsive. Someone in the administration did it, and that was incredibly stupid.
