And is it the media, or the people with agendas who decided to use the video to rile up the masses? I'm seriously asking - I can only read what I see in the papers/online, and it feels as though some are driving this for their own purposes.


I agree, and I think that it is being used to consolidate/legitimize the power/authority of various faction vying for power over there. A couple possibilities running in my mind:

1. The true protesters, who were protesting this movie, happened to be used a ruse by other organizations (al'quaeda?) to stir up the hornet's nest, if you will, and draws others to their cause.

2. Leaders/warlords feel their power/influence deteriorating, and one way to strengthen their position is to make people think they NEED them (and their policies). This is done by displacing the blame for their ineffective leadership onto the US, Germany, etc.
The leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt wrote a letter to the NYT, expressing condolences (no apology however), but placed blamed on the makers of the film.

I'm not sure exactly what's happening behind the scenes, but I'm sure politics and the power struggle post the Arab Spring are involved somehow.
