Just because the offense thinks the game is over doesn't mean the defense has to agree. Had Eli fumbled, and the game been won, people would be singing Schiano's praises.
There was no chance to do that. By diving as they were, they could only hope to fall on the fumble, with no time to run a play.

If this encourages teams not to run V-formation when time is low against the Bucs, that is more than fair. Maybe it broke one of those infamous "unwritten rules" which are so prevalent in baseball, but football tends to be more straightforward.
Those are a lot more prevalent in football, just less spoken of. They exist as a mutual understanding between players to try to minimize unnecessary injury, which is why there are reports that TB players apologized to Giants players afterwards.

Maybe it was uncouth by NFL standards. All I know is, were I a Bucs fan, I would want to know my team was still trying as time expired. And were I a Giants fan, I would want to know that my team, so famous for how it closes, would be ready for that.
The point is not being ready for anything, the point is being ready for clean tactics. This is never publicized, but the Giants players signaled their opponents they were not going to run a play. TB was taking advantage of a long standing custom to do dangerous actions that can result in serious injuries. This is not like bunting while up by ten runs or to break up a no-hitter, which is just about embarrassment, this is about serious injuries in a sport with all-too-many of them.

Sounds like it; maybe Schiano should go back to Rutgers. - 17/09/2012 06:42:11 PM 310 Views
