I am an an Android user, but unless you like to tweak the Ipad 3 is one of the best tablets out right now. Yes it has non upgradable storage but most people do not care for that right now. For parents I have no problem recommending it.

Apple
Ipad3 16gb or 32gb Wifi

Android

7" inch
Asus Nexus 7 16gb

10" inch / 9.4" inch
Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
Sony Xperia Tablet S
Asus Transformer TF700 (nicknamed infinity)

I know it is smaller but I really like the Asus Nexus 7, if the size is not a deal breaker that would be the tablet I recommend.
