It doesn't actually have anything to do with body parts, but with the length of the ball-like object.

(And yes, the obvious reply at this point is to point out that using a non-Metric system of measurement is total nonsense. :P)

Technically, NFL and SECAA footballs have a range of regulation length, but the upper bound is 11½ inches. "Gridiron" is a particularly useful term in Australia, since it is generally understood and distinguishes the game from soccer, both forms of rugby and Aussie rules. Otherwise, what Legolas said.
