It's more helpful, I think, to describe the UK as a sovereign state, and England and Scotland etc as countries within that state.

Although Wales are Northern Ireland make it even more confusing since neither have been separate countries, unlike Scotland and England.


Wales was, though not for long.
Ulster kinda was as well once.

But common usage in most of the world is that a country is a sovereign entity, I think.
