They are usually represented as shambling mindless creatures without the wit/coordination for swimming, though they could theoretically walk along the bottom (it is not like they could drown, after all.) That no one ever figures that out in zombie stories destroys much of their verisimilitude for me; it is as if intelligence creates susceptibility to whatever causes zombieism, raising the question of how much survivors differ from the affected.
