It isn't weird to have love/hate relationships with family or ex-lovers, especially if there are kids involved, nor grudging respect for people you seriously dislike, but it isn't very common to have intense feelings good and bad about someone you haven't known for a while. It's not my norm but I've certainly see a lot of romances or friendships begin with apparent intense dislike. Always seemed peculiar to me, but it isn't too uncommon.
