It should be named after Halas, who did a lot more for the game. But I don't expect you to agree, though I could probably live with Curly Lambeau over Lombardi, too. Lombardi was at the right place at the right time; had the Super Bowls started two years later they might have named it after Weeb Ewbank (which would've sounded a lot freakier. :P )

if lombardi hadn't died so suddenly after winning the first two it would probably still be named the "world championship game trophy". if bert bell had lived until the merger, the trophy would probably be named after him. i mean, there's plenty of people in the NFL history it could be named after, but nobody dominated the game like lombardi did in his career, and the nature of his sudden illness and death gave a lot of people a lot of reasons to honor his contribution to the game in some meaningful fashion...

And for what it's worth I think you're pretty much dead on here. Perhaps it SHOULD still be named the championship trophy just to head off this kind of debate. The moment you name the overall trophy after someone primarily associated with one or two teams it starts to look a little biased; I can't help wondering what Madden and Landry thought of winning the "Lombardi" Trophy. The latter might not have minded, but you know it stuck in Maddens craw even if he didn't say anything.
