It's not too high on my priority list either, like I said. Legolas Send a noteboard - 20/09/2013 06:17:24 PM

But I read about Duolingo in the Economist, it sounded interesting and since I already know enough French, German and Spanish that I need more advanced methods to improve those than that, that left only Italian or Portuguese as possible testing options.

Like you, I'm really hoping for them to implement less obvious languages, Turkish in particular would be good.

View original postMostly because my desire to learn a language is directly correlated to a country's history and literature. And post-Renaissance Italian history is not one I am fascinated with enough to care too much about.

Those are factors for me as well, but so is traveling, and there's definitely a ton of places in Italy that I still need to see... with English and my improvised Italian words I get far enough in touristic areas, but not perhaps outside them. So as I said, I can't be bothered to take classes or put real effort into it that I could be spending on higher priority languages, but fifteen minutes every now and then on Duolingo, if it improves my fluency to a basic speaking level... why not.
View original postI do wish there were an app out there to help me learn a non-European language such as Japanese. But I haven't seen anything good.

Those would have to be language-specific... there should be some? Especially for Japanese, considering how popular that seems to be in the US as a foreign language, particularly among the geeky crowd that is likely to design apps.
