Rivalries are critical for football and divisions keep rivalries alive but winning your division needs to matter. Wildcard slots are to give good teams who had the misfortune of being in strong divisions a chance but they have to do it on the road. It is simple. Want a home playoff? win your division. Want all home games? Win your conference. If the wild card team is that much better than they should win anyways. These rules do give an advantage to cold weather teams since they are more used to weather and my team is a warm weather team but these incentives to win make football more exciting. Don't want to play in Green Bay in January? I don't blame you but the answer is win.
