Refer to the place as "West Russia" or "East Poland". That's how they tell Ukranophiles from posers Cannoli Send a noteboard - 09/12/2014 05:58:27 PM

Only the west, not the wartorn eastern parts. I know next to nothing about Ukraine, or it's culture or history. What I do know comes from a few Ukrainian friends I have there. I picked up some Ukrainian and Russian phrasebooks.

Anyway, my question is: has anyone traveled there before? Any weird cultural practices? Good food to try? Anything I should bring specifically, or see while I'm in western Ukraine? Besides Chernobyl and Maidan, I'm not really sure of any sites to see or things to do.

Input would be appreciated!

Seriously, though, the only thing I know for sure is don't call it "the Ukraine." Oh, and Kiev has (had? ) a Great Gate, that Mussorgsky wrote a piece about, but the Nazis might have fucked it up, so it might not be there anymore. I might have also suggested Sevastopol, but I think that's in Russia now.
